Watch the whole film here: http://www.realeyz.tv/en/workingman-s-death.html Next to defunct coal mine is a memorial commemorating Ukrainian workers who surpassed their production quotas. Today, the workers who break their backs in the mine do it without the political brouhaha, and they earn much less money than in socialist times. The mine was closed because operating it proved no longer profitable. But for those who prospect the leftover crumbs of coal here, it represents survival. Glawogger also visits workers in Indonesia who labor at dangerous jobs. Working along the rim of an active volcano, they quarry the sulfur-rich stone and carry it back to the valley, where tourists weave among the workers, asking to have their pictures taken with them. In Pakistan, Glawogger follows workers as they dismantal scrapped barges; in China he documents steel workers. An open air slaughterhouse in Nigeria offers up bloody and bizarre images. The epilogue is filmed in Dortmund, where a decommissioned mine has been transformed into an amusement center. Is hard labor disappearing or is it just becoming invisible?
